In 1995, when Quinn’s Merlot source dried up, the dynamic businessman planted his own vineyard on the west side of Paso Robles with an eye toward supplying his home winemaking needs and selling the rest of the crop to commercial producers.
Two years later, Nichols bought the vineyard next to Quinn’s and the two plunged into the grape-growing business, selling their fruit to such respected Napa Valley cellars as Niebaum-Coppola, St. Supery, Fetzer, and Hess Collection. Today they farm three hundred acres of vineyards on the west and east side and continue to sell fruit to some of the finest wineries in the state. In 1998 the partners noted an industry-wide surplus of grapes and began making wine under their own label in a bid to showcase their vineyards’ quality and enhance grape sales.
