The Fine Arts Collection exists to support the general mission of the college by promoting awareness and understanding of a broad spectrum of artistic expression through diversity in media, culture, and historical perspective. Nearly one-third of the collection is on circulating display throughout the campus. Over 1,200 items comprise the fine arts collection anchored by extensive holdings of the works of Herbjorn Gausta, Marguerite Wildenham. Gerhard Marcks, and Fritjof Schroeder. The collection, housed in the Preus Library, also includes examples of pre-Columbian pottery and Inuit sculpture. Regional artists are well represented by paintings, prints, and ceramics, and examples of works by such international artists as Oldenburg, Picasso, Rosenquist, Vlaminck and Whistler are also presented. Works in the collection include paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, assemblages, textiles, ceramics, and utilitarian or ritual objects in any medium whose principal value resides in the their aesthetic merit. Also of possible interest on campus, student work is exhibited in the M.O. Running Gallery at Loyalty Hall and four additional galleries in other buildings on campus. These galleries also host exhibitions of work by regionally and nationally recognized artists in solo and group shows.
