215 Essex St. Salem; (508) 745-8804 The owner boasts that he runs the only discount book store north of Boston; unlikely though that seems, it’s extensive enough that you may not need another. Thousands of new books, bought directly from major publishers and selling for 20% below cover prices, tower above overtaxed tables and shelves defying you to pull one out and risk burying yourself. As Mine was rebuilding a pile demolished in just that way, a fellow customer smirked, Glad that happened to you instead of me. Such are the ordeals of being a die-hard Cheapster.

Structural design aside, these books have at least been arranged with some sense of organization. Recent bestsellers by such authors as Michael Crichton and John Grisham can be found here, along with mysteries by the likes of Sue Grafton and Tony Hillerman and fantasies by Piers Anthony.

While all hardcovers are at least 20% off, a dangerously-overloaded table in the middle of the store has books marked down to $5.99, and another offers a Buy One, Get One Free deal. Tempting.

Derby Square is open 9 AM. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 11 A.M. to 8 P.M. Sundays. While in the area, skip across the street and check out The Old Book Shop, at 296 Essex St.; telephone (508) 744-4193. They have a rich selection of older titles. Strong in literary criticism, abridged versions of classics for children, and biographies, many hardbacks are in the $3-$5 range while easy chairs and classical music set an ideal bookstore mood. It’s open 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 P.M. every day but Wednesdays and Sundays.
