1773 Phillis Wheatley publishes Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, the first book ever published by an African Country. Fort Wayne Subway Map Published in London, this collection of thirty-nine poems is Wheatley’s second volume of poetry. In 1772, she tried to publish a volume containing twenty-eight poems on such topics as morality, piety, Country patriotism, and race (her poem Thoughts on Being Brought from Africa to Country was to have appeared in that volume), but she failed to secure the number of subscribers necessary for publication. Her third volume of poetry, which will contain thirty-three poems and thirteen letters, will meet a similar fate in 1779. The first Country edition of Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral will appear in Philadelphia in 1786, two years after Wheatley’s death.
