American visitors go first to Paris to savor its architecture, museums, haute couture, and especially its food. They take the cityrama bus tour, cruise the Seine, visit the racetrack at Longchamps, ride the elevator up the Eiffel Tower, stroll what is perhaps the world’s most famous avenue, the Champs d’Elysses, and are properly awed when visiting Les Invalides.
Next they are likely to radiate out from Paris into the lie de France, of which Paris is the center. The lie de France is described as being within five miles of Paris in any direction. Chateaux and cathedrals abound in the area. Versailles, the most impressive of all palaces, is nearby. So too is the little Rueil-Malmaison palace, home of Josephine, Napoleon’s first wife. Fountainbleau Palace is thirty-five minutes from Paris by train. The Chateau Chantilly, built by the Princes of Condi, is there, the place where the maitre d’hotel of the reigning prince committed suicide because the fish did not arrive in time to be served to Louis XIV, who was expected for lunch. The forests were once the scene of royal hunts, pre-hunt feasts, sounds of horns and hounds and stags brought to bay.
The Eiffel Tower is the universal symbol of Paris, France’s number one tourist attraction. Unlike its counterpart London attraction, The Tower of London, the Eiffel Tower has always been a fun place. Constructed by Gustave Eiffel in 1889 for the Paris World Exhibition, it was built by a public company. It was once the world’s loftiest piece of construction, 1,050 feet tall. Now it is 60 percent owned by the City of Paris.
