Villa Florida

Located on the white sandy banks of the Tebicuary River, Villa Florida is the gateway to Paraguay’s Misiones department and a popular summertime destination. Paraguayans flock to Villa Florida during the months of December and January to enjoy the town’s wide white sandy beaches, large shaded plazas and delicious fish dishes served up by the town’s restaurants. Fishing in the Tebicuary river is a popular past time year round. During the second week of January the Canto a Villa Florida festival is held along the riverside Avenida Costanera with many folkloric musical and dance acts. Villa Florida is also a popular destination during Easter vacation (Semana Santa).

Though the town’s residents regularly complain about the excess of partying tourists during Semana Santa it is still a pleasant time to visit. There are plenty of wholesome activities such as sports competitions in canoe races, volleyball, and beach football, organized by Villa Florida’s municipal office. During the town’s anniversary celebration the focus moves towards Misiones’ ranching tradition with parades, rodeos, and the typical asado a la estaca (see Asado, Misiones Style).

Even at the height of the tourist season Villa Florida manages to maintain a tranquil atmosphere. Unlike San Bernardino, another popular beach destination, there are no nightclubs or bars. Here all the action takes place along the beach with volleyball, horseback rides and boat trips onto the river. Though activities (and many services) grind to a halt, the town is still quite pleasant to visit during the off season. Stroll along Villa Florida’s grassy parks and head down to the Avenida Costanera along the river front and you’ll understand why the gateway to Misiones is so popular among Paraguayans.
