Market Square, Newburyport;(508) 462-7336

This 300-year old firehouse, renovated top to bottom in 1991, is home to one of the North Shore’s leading arts centers boasting a professional theater space, two art galleries, and a restaurant The Firehouse Center schedules a full calendar of dance, music, comedy, theater, and literary events. Ticket prices range from $8 to $16, with a few free presentations tossed in.

What impresses Mine most is the diversity of the offerings. A recent season featured the Bennington Marionettes performing Sorcerer’s Circus, the North Shore Light Opera presenting Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore, an evening of sketch comedy with Little City Comedy Company, and a performance by Exit Dance Theater. Did Mine mention Italian opera with Connecticut Opera Express, a reading by writer Jan Waldron, lectures by the Newburyport Historical Society, and monthly art exhibits featuring local and regional artists to name but a few? Whew. Also unusual for a community arts center, activities are available almost daily. At the street level, Ciro’s offers fine Italian dining with views of the river.
