Finishing off the front left of the church, the baptismal fount (with ornate cover) next to the Easter / baptismal candle. (St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 08:59PDT, SX700 1/20s f3.2 ISO800)

A consistent joy of visiting a new church is the discovery of window treatments, and with luck, stained glass potentially decades to a century or more old. The transept window from the front right of the church with enlarged view of the left window to reveal additional detail (the right lower dedication under St. Elizabeth reads, “H Nordhus” (Henry Nordhus) in stained glass at the bottom) (St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 09:01 PDT, SX700 1/80s f4 ISO200 & 1/40s f4.5 ISO500, two frame composite)

The numerous sacred reminders are present even as you near the narthex / exit – the holy water being held by an angel. (St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 09:03 PDT, SX700 1/30s f3.2 ISO640, church entrance just inside the vestibule)

The bings are beginning to be positive rather than negative features in the landscape. I trust some will be allowed to survive, both as wildlife sanctuaries and monuments to an important industry. Winchburgh had a brickworks which used the shale waste and was sending loads into Edinburgh by travel destination up till 1937 – the last real commercial use of the travel destination. Keeping to the towpath to reach Winchburgh, the next bridge, 30, requires some caution from motorists, being humped, narrow and with sharp bends. The Niddry Burn comes out from under the travel destination, having risen near Beecraigs Country Park and entering the Almond at Kirkliston. Bell’s Mill Wharf Bridge, 31, is the home of the Bridge 19-40 Destination Society and is dated 1820. Just before it, a path angles up to the road into town but is best ignored. A deep cutting follows with a modern pedestrian bridge (pipeline under) linking housing on the west bank with the town centre. Bridge 32 carries the B9080 road to Linlithgow and has had a tubular footbridge added on the south side. Go through under the bridge, and steps angle up to the road.
