Clayworks is a nonprofit arts organization that offers classes in ceramic arts. Studio artists have the option to display and sell their work in the gallery that acts as a storefront for Clayworks. The gallery is small and not particularly pretty, but the rotating displays of varied and high-quality pottery and porcelain make it worth a look. Local artists made the pieces and the prices are very reasonable. ELDER GALLERY

This is not the place to find well-priced works by emerging artists. Elder Gallery specializes in upscale works of art; it represents 50 American artists and is the exclusive representative for the collections of Leon A. Makielski, an American portrait and landscape artist, and British painter Ernest Walker. The space houses two separate galleries: the main gallery, which hosts rotating exhibits, and Elder Annex Gallery, with a continuous collection of works by the gallery’s stable of artists. Most of the works shown in the gallery are paintings; there is also a small collection of 3-D art on display, including sculptures, earthenware, and porcelain.
The Dutch engineer and surveyor Bernard Romans publishes Concise Natural History Milan Subway Map of East and West Florida along with coastal charts for sailors. A Yale student, David Bushnell, invents and builds a one-man submarine for use against the British. 1776 The Country Revolution leads to the suspension of the meetings of the Country Philosophical Society. These meetings will not resume until 1779. The shortage of gunpowder for the Country armies leads to increased interest in gunpowder manufacture, particularly the scarcest ingredient, potassium nitrate, known as saltpeter. Benjamin Rush publishes Essays upon the Making of Salt-Petre and Gun Powder.
