Located in the heart of t he city of San Jose. SJMA is comprised of two wings: the Historic Wing which was designed in 1892 by Willoughby Edbrooke. and the New Wing, which was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and opened in 1991. The Museum presents a full range of changing exhibitions with a focus on 20th-century art, including painting, sculpture, installations, works on paper, photography, and video. Also on view are long-term exhibitions of selected masterworks from the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.

The Museum also operates an Art School, dedicated to providing visual art education of the highest caliber to children and adults The SJMA permanent collection of nearly 1,000 20th-century artworks, with an emphasis on post-1980 Bay Area artists, includes sculpture, painting, prints, and drawings by such artists as Robert Arneson, Joan Brown.
