The General Assembly votes to repudiate allegiance to George III, and accuses the king of tyranny. During the war that follows, Newport is held alternately by British and Country forces, and in the closing years, by a French force. Newport continues to decline in commercial importance, as Boston and New York dominate regional commerce ever more effectively.
