The main road runs N from Skaerbaek to Brens, which has a massive church built of stone from the Rhineland (interesting frescoes). From Ribe (see p, 223) an attractive country road goes off on the right to Gram, where the castle is set in a beautiful park on the shores of a small lake. A narrow road continues to Foie (13th c. church).
Beyond Ribe a road runs NE to Vejen. In the Billingland is an interesting collection of remote-controlled model aircraft and ships. At Gredstedbro a road goes off on the left to Esbjerg (88) but A11 continues N to Varde crossing A1 (Esbjerg-Copenhagen) near the small airport of Skast.
Varde (pop. 10,000; Varde Hotel, 70 Dania, 35 b.), a busy little industrial town, has a number of old houses and an interesting local museum (furniture and decorative art from the Renaissance to the present day).
The coastal region, which begins to the W of Varde and extends northward for a considerable distance, is particularly attractive. At Blavandis Blavands Huk, the most westerly point in Denmark. The road to BlSvand passes through Oksbol, which has a Romanesque church with 13th c. frescoes. Inland from the coast are a series of plantations designed to protect against drifting sand. In the BlSbjerg plantation is the Bf$b-jerg, a 64 m (210 ft) high dune (fine views of the surrounding area). The coast road now runs along the spit of land (Holmsland) between the Ringkobing Fjord and the sea. Half-way along is Hvide Sande (Holmsland Klit Hotel, 56 Sjomandshjemmet, 32 Skodbjerge, 65 b.), a fishing port and tourist resort. The whole of this area forms an interesting bird sanctuary.
At Skjern a road branches off on the left to Ringkobing (pop. 6300; FjordgSrden Hotel, 103 youth hostel; two camp sites), which has a squat brick church of the late medieval period. The Museum contains a large collection of coins and a collection of material from Greenland assembled by the explorer Mylius Erichsen. On the coast, 9 km (6 miles) NW, surrounded by dunes, is the resort of Sondervig (Klitten Hotel, 55 Strandkroen, 32 two camp sites). Road 16 runs N from Ringkobing to Hee, with a granite church (restored in the 19th c.); leisure park Sommerland West, wildlife park and bird sanctuary. NW of Hee, on a minor road, lies Stadil, at the N end of the Stadil Fjord. The church has a famous Golden Altar (Renaissance, c. 1625). A gilded bronze relief of about 1200 is set in the central panel of the altar. Road 16 continues to Ulfborg, where there is an interesting church and Ntfrrre Vosborg Castle, protected against either enemy attack or flooding by ramparts measuring up to 6 m (20 ft) high.
