Founded by Daniel Wadsworth in 1842. the Wadsworth Atheneum is Americas oldest public art museum. In addition to displaying a portion of its permanent collection of over 50,000 objects, the museum presents more than ten special exhibitions per year. The Atheneums permanent collection includes Egyptian. Greek, and Roman bronzes; Renaissance and baroque paintings; the largest collection of Hudson River School landscapes in the United States; French and American Impressionist paintings: and 20th-century masterpieces.

Wesleyan University – Davison Art Center

The collection is augmented frequently, with works that contribute to the educational mission of the Center. The Centers print collection includes work by Diirer, Rembiandt. Italian Renaissance artists. Goya, Manet, Millet, and modern and contemporary American artists, especially Jim Dine, along with a substantial collection of Japanese woodcuts.

Wadsworth Atheneum Parking

The photography collection ranges from the 1840s to the present and includes works by Muybridge, Atget, Steichen, Bourke-White, Maik. and Irager. The drawings in the Centers collection include works by many important French and American artists, such as Lalanne. Sargent, and Whistler. The painting collection is unall, but also of high quality (e.g, Charles Sheeler). There is also a sculpture collection. Also of possible interest on campus is the Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery, dedicated to temporary exhibitions ol contemporary art in all media. Its exhibition program consists of 4-5 shows per year. The Zilkha Gallery is open Tues-Sun, noon-4pm; tel. 685-2684.
