LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA

896,000 acres in Arizona (1,480,000 acres total). Located in northwest Arizona just west of Grand Canyon National Park, as well as in the southeast corner of Nevada, this National Recreation Area features 110-mile-long Lake Mead and 67-mile-long Lake Mohave. Both were formed by damming up the Colorado River.

In this desert region are mountains, plateaus, canyons, and sandstone formations. With some sandy beaches along the shore, the lake attract many tourists and there’s-lots of boating. Vegetation includes joshua tree and cactus, with mule deer, bighorn sheep, mountain lion, and coyote among the wildlife.

Activities: Hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding are possible within the National Recreation Area, but most travel must be cross-country since there are few established trails. Fishing is available at the lakes. Hunting is permitted in portions of the area.

Camping Regulations: A large number of established campsites are available along the lake-shores. Backcountry camping and campfires are allowed here as well as elsewhere, except near developed areas or where otherwise prohibited. No permits are required. Since summers are very hot here, the best time to visit is October through May.
