WESTLOCK PICNIC AREAS

If you bring a picnic, consider unpacking it at the scenic Lindahl Park next to the Westlock Pioneer Museum. Also nearby is the Mountie Park Recreation Area, at 100th Street and 96th Avenue, which has a playground, horseshoe pits, tennis courts, and ball diamonds. Rotary Trail loops into natural areas with pathways for walking, jogging, in-line skating, and cycling.

Other picnic areas include Rainbow Park, a day-use area about 6.5 kilometres east, then 1.5 kilometres south, of Westlock on Highway 18. Located 38.6 kilometres north of Westlock, Long Island Lake Municipal Park is ideal for those who wish to boat, fish, or swim. To reach the park, located on about 57 hectares at the north end of the lake, travel 22 kilometres north from Westlock on Highway 44 to Dapp Corner (turn right at the store), continue 12 kilometres north on Highway 801, then turn right to travel 3 kilometres east.

Edmonton Skydive Centre

Location: About 5 km east of Westlock. Exit Westlock eastbound. After 4 km, turn left at the sign for Westlock Airport and follow the road to the end.

Info: 780-444-JUMP (5867); www.edmontonskydive.com.

The Edmonton Skydive Centre offers instruction and coaching for both recreational jumpers and those aiming to become professional skydivers. Jumping depends on the weather, so if it’s raining, snowing, or colder than -10°C, planes won’t take off. Winds faster than 24 kilometres per hour and low cloud cover can also stall skydiving activities. If this happens, just visit the centre’s cafe and chat up some jumpers while you wait for the weather to change!
