London Subway Map

London has been described as a collection of villages run together. London also has two cities, the city of London and the city of Westminster. You know you are in the city of London when nearly every male is wearing a bowler hat, carrying an umbrella, and maybe a briefcase. It is the financial city of Europe and home of the Bank of England and the Stock Exchange.

Two miles up the river Thames is the city of Westminster, with Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. Big Ben, London’s landmark clock, looks down from the Houses of Parliament on the Thames River.

The West End is like New York City’s Fifth Avenue on Central Park. It’s where the monied people live and includes Mayfair and St. James.

London is large, larger than New York City, Paris, Rome or Berlin, about thirty miles in diameter. To get around London most people take the Underground. It is the easiest and least expensive way. Compared to the New York subway it is more attractive, more pleasant to use and much safer. It too is noisy and boring. (Moscow’s subway outdoes them all.)

The taxis of London are mostly diesel and roomy. The cab drivers are a race apart from New York City’s cabbies, mostly restrained, quiet and polite.

London’s legitimate theater is generally considered the best in the world and costs about half that of New York City’s. There are more than forty live theaters.
