BLM LANDS IN UTAH
Utah has no less than 22,000,000 acres of BLM (Bureau of Land Management) or public domain lands, located throughout most of the state. Access to BLM areas is sometimes difficult, and printed literature exists for very few of the tracts.
On these lands are desert mountains, scores of canyons and gulches, mesas and plateaus, arches and bridges, and an endless variety of colored rock formations.
Included are the Henry Mountains, the Deep Creek Mountains, Paria Canyon, and a stretch of the Colorado River. There’s a section of the 19,954-acre Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, along with a number of Wilderness Study Areaslocations which have been recommended for wilderness designation.
Activities: Hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, and mountain biking are allowed on most BLM lands, but there are few established trails. Most travel must be cross-country. Fishing is available, and hunting is permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: Camping and campfires are normally allowed, except near public use areas or where otherwise prohibited. While permits are not necessary for most areas, they are required for a few popular locations. Campsites should be at least 100 feet from springs, in order to allow wildlife access to water. Campers are asked to refrain from building new fire rings.
