REKTANGO TO GROOVE TO SWEET TUNES
Details about Rektango don’t appear on the Salamanca Arts Centre calendar despite it happening regularly for the past 12 years. Why? Because there’s simply no need. This free weekly music and dance session has grown organically to become synonymous with an after-work Friday night shindig – a place where locals can let off steam with a brew, boogie and an old-fashioned chinwag. Set in one of Hobart’s coolest public spaces, surrounded by sandstone warehouses and with a dramatic bluestone backdrop, the Rektango experience comes with a taste of local history courtesy of the long-standing architecture. Music comes compliments of a live band with an ever-changing combo of players who’ll entertain you with a good-time jam that’ll get you Tassie two-stepping in no time. You’d better keep yourself hydrated with a local beer, cider or sweet sangria in summer. And if the dancing isn’t enough to warm the cockles in winter, the mulled wine will heat you up good and proper. Rektango is no exclusive scene; everyone’s welcome and people from all walks of life get down and mingle. There’s a refreshingly unhip, easygoing vibe. You could almost call it a love-in. The action eases up by 8pm, so you’ve got the rest of the night to share the love at your next venue of choice.
