This is theater for children, by children. The Children’s Theatre has been staging performances for pint-sized audiences since 1946 and is regarded as one of the top youth theater organizations in the country. The curtain rises more than 600 times a season and performances are aimed at audiences aged 3-18. The options range from light-hearted children’s favorites (Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Goodnight Moon) to classics (As You Like It, Animal Farm). The theater also stages 15 professional adult productions per year.
1738 A smallpox epidemic rages in Charles Town, South Carolina Austin Map . A Scottish doctor, James Kilpatrick, inoculates about 800 people before the practice is outlawed. Austin Map Isaac Greenwood loses his position at Harvard due to drunkenness. 1739 On January 2, Isaac Greenwood’s former pupil and astronomer John Winthrop, Jr., takes the Hollis Chair at Harvard. He will hold the chair until his death, introducing differential and integral calculus into the curriculum. A French military party discovers a deposit of fossils, including a mastodon, at Big Bone Lick on the Ohio River in the present-day state of Kentucky. The Dutch botanist Johann Friedrich Gronovius’s Flora Virginica is published. It is based on a manuscript by the Virginia botanist and collector John Clayton. A second volume appears in 1743.
