Money Matters :
The official currency is the peso. There are notes of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 pesos, coins of 1, 2 and 5 pesos and 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents. Currently around 3 pesos to 1 dollar.

Crime :
Taxis are known thieves down here. When you choose one, visibly write down the cab number while he is watching. Typical scam is they take your money, say it’s bad currency…and while you’re not watching, they very quickly do a bait and switch slight of hand, fold the bills in half and hand them back to you with WAY less money.
Hotels :
There is a huge concentration of hotels in the center of the city, but depending on your needs, you may want to consider staying in a fully furnished apartment for the same price or less. Cook your own meals and save your money for the putas. Here’s a link to very reasonable apartments right in the heart of the action, the Recolecta area. Around $40 a night. Hotels will run you $120 a night.
