HOWARD MADISON WADE HOUSE

530 Hermitage Rd.

Howard Madison Wade and his wife, Rosalie Tarver Wade, built two homes on this site. The first was built in 1911, when the couple decided to move out of Uptown and into the country to raise their daughter, Isabelle. The 1.5-acre site was chosen for its location in the brand-new development of Myers Park, facing a small park. The couple was among the first property owners in the neighborhood, which was a planned community designed by Massachusetts-based landscape architect John Nolen. Wade, the owner of the Wade Manufacturing Company, makers of custom fixtures and furnishings, designed the house and had his workers build it. In the 1920s, less than a decade after the home was built, Wade decided to have the house redesigned by renowned Philadelphia-based architect Charles Barton Keene, who initially came to North Carolina in 1917 to design a home for tobacco baron R. J. Reynolds. In 1928, Wade hired Keene to replace the home he’d originally designed. Wade oversaw every detail of the construction, from offering his input on the design to vetting the contractors and negotiating construction bids. The successful bidder was B. Lowndes Jackson, who agreed to build the house for $63,865. It took three years to construct the Georgian Colonial mansion. The home is in excess of 14,000 square feet and features fine metalwork, marble floors, and antique fireplaces. The home’s most unusual feature is the dining room, which Wade designed as a replica of the Baltimore Room in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Rosalie Wade was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames and many of the groups’ meetings were held in the house. The home is one of the few houses of its size in Charlotte and retains its original architectural features. It continues to be used as a private residence.
