DARTMOOR
Encounter a hiker wearing outdoor clothing with arrows all over it and rejoice, for you’ve spotted a rare sight: an escaped convict from Dartmoor Prison. Probably wise to hand over your own clothing if requested to do so.

EXMOOR
Designated as Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserve, it’s the perfect place to hone your Pole Star navigation skills – assuming it isn’t raining when it’s dark.
LAKE DISTRICT
Sixteen million visitors a year can’t be wrong…at least not about the traffic congestion on the Windermere to Grasmere road.
LOCH LOMOND AND THE TROSSACHS
Whether you take the high road or the low road, never ask a passing hiker if they’ve lost their trossachs.
NEW FOREST
Created around 1079 by William I as a royal hunting ground, it’s about time they dropped the ‘new’, although it was only designated as a national park in 2005, so in national park terms it’s still relatively new.
NORTHUMBERLAND
Sandwiched between the Scottish Borders and Hadrian’s Wall, hikers should keep checking over their shoulder in case they find themselves caught in the middle of the next cross-border skirmish.
NORTH YORKSHIRE MOORS RAILWAY
The park where you literally step back in time, especially if crossing the North Yorkshire Moors Railway line with its steam trains, and then drop into Goathland, also known as Aidensfield to fans of a certain 1950s TV drama. (There’s no need to switch to 1950s walking clothing, though.)
