50 Washington Square is surrounded by university buildings classrooms and student residences. The very attractive houses on the north side are rented to professors. All the narrow streets to the south merit a visit. The most animated are MacDougal and Bleecker. teeming with restaurants. jazz cellars and craft shops.

There are many cafes in this area, serving good espresso coffee. Go west along Bleecker Street until you reach Sixth Avenue; follow it to the north, as far as 4th Street, one of the main shopping streets in the Village. A short way along you will come to Sheridan Square,

Originality of shops and costumes brightens the Greenwich Village scene where you go left on Christopher Street into a choice residential area. Small tree-lined streets of brownstones similar-looking, four-storey brick or brownish-red sandstone houses, each with a flight of stairs leading up to the door make up this perfectly charming neighbourhood. You’ll find the Village’s best antique dealers here and some very good restaurants. The streets around Christopher have almost a country feel to them.
