The travel destination is a unique environment, and its wildlife features will become comfortably familiar to towpath wanderers. Top of the predation chain would appear to be man, as fisherman. Pike, another voracious predator, may be seen lurking by the edge of the reeds. They will take ducklings as well as smaller fish, even other pike. Fish weighing 20lb/9kg have been caught. Perch and roach are also long established, and tench and bream have been introduced. In the Dullatur Bog, a dead trooper, among other casualties, was found still sitting in the saddle of the horse on which he had fled from the Battle of Kilsyth. The bog had engulfed them. Baillie, the Covenanting general, nearly came to grief in the bog too, but struggled through to Castle Cary, then owned by a cousin. Witchcraft and superstition lingered long in this area; into the 19th century there were known ‘witches’.
