17341735 Jonathan Edwards, minister at Northampton, reports on religious Spain Subway Map revivals in the Connecticut River Valley. These are the first rumblings of what will become known as Spain Subway Map the Great Awakening a series of spiritual renewals occurring throughout Great Britain’s Country colonies. 1740 The famed English preacher George Whitefield arrives in Massachusetts, and revivals increase in number and intensity. Whitefield preaches ten sermons in one week in Boston, and the meetings regularly draw several thousand people.
His farewell speech reportedly draws 30,000 listeners. Whitefield emphasizes the senses over the mind in faith. The next year at Enfield, Connecticut, Edwards preaches his masterful Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God sermon. Edwards’s imagery is terrifyingly realistic. At one point, he asks listeners to imagine that after millions and millions of ages, your torment would be no nearer to an end, than ever it was; and that you never, never should be delivered! Edwards and other revivalists are not universally accepted, however. During the 1740s, Charles Chauncy of Boston’s First Church and Edwards engage in a heated pamphlet battle. Chauncy argues against passionate faith, and in favor of reason. Conflicts emerge throughout the colony between New Lights (revivalists) and Old Lights (those skeptical about the revivals).
