The permanent holdings include an important collection of original poster art by such illustrators as Howard Chandler Christy. “Harrison Fisher, .James Montgomery Flagg. Also of possible interest, the History and Education Center maintains a satellite gallery, the Gallery at Jefferson Park (located in the ARC Building at 811 Gatehouse Road, Falls Church, Virginia 22042 – (703) 206-8869).

In addition to the various student exhibitions, which are part of American Universitys graduate and undergraduate studio art programs, the Gallery hosts five changing exhibitions each year, one of which is curated from the 4,000-piece Watkins Collection. The Watkins Collection began with the gift of a group of paintings by artist friends as a memorial to C. Law Watkins after his death in 1945. It has grown to include more than 450 paintings, and thousands of prints and drawings, with a focus primarily on 20th-century American art. Holdings include works by Karel Appel, Milton Avery.
