The First Presbyterian Church is the second church to stand on this site. In 1815, it was the site of a non-denominational church that held worship services for Scottish, Irish, German, and British immigrants. It was originally called The Town Church and was open to worshippers of all faiths but, due to their larger numbers, was used primarily by Presbyterians. The First Presbyterian Church held its first services in this location in 1821 and dedicated the first church building in 1823, making it the oldest organization in Charlotte history to continually operate in the same location. The church has hosted several important events since it was founded, including the 50th anniversary of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence in 1825 and meetings of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States in 1864, 1897, 1920, and 1958. The church’s first minister, Dr. Robert Hall Morrison, later became the first president of Davidson College. A second building was added in 1857; the original facade, narthex, and tower remain. The Gothic Revival architecture of the building was retained in all subsequent additions. In 2002 Ben Long, a renowned fresco artist and native of Statesville, North Carolina, painted a fresco in the church’s fellowship hall.

The First Presbyterian Church held its first services at this location in 1821.
