Formed by the merger in 1996 of two institutions, the Museum of Art and History presents ten to twelve exhibitions annually, along with correlated education programs for both adults and children. The Museum’s permanent collection includes works of art and regional historical artifacts. There is a special emphasis on education for all ages. In addition to the four galleries located at the McPherson Center, the Museum owns and maintains two historical sites, Evergreen Cemetery and the Davenport Jail. Evergreen Cemetery offers monthly tours to enable the public to learn about the community’s past in an interactive manner. The Museum also uses the Octagon, originally the 1882 Hall of Records, as the site of the museum store.

The Sesnon Gallery operates a museum-oriented program for educational purposes. The Gallery organizes an annual schedule of temporary exhibitions that represents a broad range of methods, t media, and cultures in a local/regional/national context with a focus on contemporary practice.

The Museum features the exhibition of works by emerging and mid-career artists, particularly from Southern California. International and multi-disciplinary, the Museum is a non-collecting, artist-driven organization which presents both group and one-person exhibitions, while serving as an active laboratory to encourage artistic expression and experimentation. Museum exhibition programs include the Artist Project Series, an ongoing series of commissioned work by contemporary artists; major thematic, scholarly, group, and one-person exhibit ons; and special, intimately-scaled projects. Over the last ten years, it has presented the work of over 1.000
