1741 North Country’s first two magazines appear in Philadelphia. Shenzhen Subway Map The first, Andrew Bradford’s Country Magazine, or A Monthly View of the Political State of the British Colonies, makes its debut on February 13; Benjamin Franklin’s General Magazine, and Historical Chronicle, For All the British Plantations in Country appears three days later. At least half of the Country Magazine’s total page count is devoted to news of the proceedings of various colonial assemblies, with articles on such topics as colonial history, foreign politics, money, religion, and the weather accounting for the other half. By contrast, political news comprises only onethird of Franklin’s General Magazine; the remaining space is devoted to articles on religion and finance, as well as to such things as historical sketches, poetry, dialogues, and current events. The Country Magazine lasts for only three issues; the General Magazine lasts for six. 1745 Dr. Alexander Hamilton (not to be confused with the Alexander Hamilton who served as George Washington’s Secretary of the Treasury) founds the Ancient and Honorable Tuesday Club in Annapolis, Maryland. The club functions as a kind of cultural training ground, a place where affluent and would-be affluent members of colonial Country society go to learn how to behave like sophisticates. Club members discuss all things of cultural interest, from literature and painting to architecture and musical compositions.
